The Moment Before It Disappears

There are images that seem to arrive before they become visible. They gather slowly, change shape, lose information, and return in

another form. What remains is not a faithful record of a moment, but the emotional weight it leaves behind. Rebecca Bernau’s practice moves between digital and analogue media. Inspired by photographs, she redraws gestures and postures of the body, gradually reducing each image until only its emotional essence remains. The body becomes the first vessel of memory where experience, perception, and feelings are held before they begin to transform. Like light or haze, memory accumulates in layers. The Moment Before It Disappears approaches memory not as recollection, but as a material occurrence. Bernau’s paintings do not illustrate remembered experiences—they evoke the way memories themselves behave: fragmentary, mutable, and deeply physical. They occupy a space between permanence and impermanence. Their surfaces appear simultaneously built and eroded, as though each work has passed through multiple states before taking its final shape. Layers of pigment settle like sediment, translucent veils obscure as much as they reveal, and forms emerge only to dissolve back into atmosphere. The image is never fixed; it remains in ongoing transformation. Across the selected works, traces linger longer than narratives. The paintings invite a slower way of looking, where meaning does not emerge through recognition alone, but through the subtle encounter between surface, texture, and time. In this space, what is fleeting becomes tangible, and what cannot be held finds a lasting form.

Rather than illustrating remembered moments, her paintings evoke the way memories settle like light, haze, and sediment: accumulating in layers, emerging and disappearing at once. We look forward to welcoming you to the
